The Garden

The Garden is a musical project that follows the journey of a teenage girl as she grapples with the death of her father, divergence with her mother, and the conflict between residents and developers of her south London estate. Written in a style of magical realism The Garden brings together worlds that are usually left apart, blending spirituality, nature and regeneration. When the protagonist unconsciously plants a gifted seed in anguish in the middle of her estate she causes a huge and magnificent garden to sprout from the ground over-night. This chain of events leads her and her friends to reconnect with the community around them and become aware of the plot to rehouse and redevelop their estate. With an afro-folk and electronic pallet reflecting the musical diversity of London but also highlighting cultural differences. The Garden speaks of getting to know your roots and finding love at the core, building a community and standing up to power even when there appears to be little left.
The Garden is a new musical with Book and Music by Chisara Agor and is currently in development with the support of the National Theatre.

Chisara Agor was awarded a MGCFutures Bursary in 2019 to develop their new musical The Garden. This involved undergoing three professional recordings of songs from the musical at The Boat House Studios Ipswhich directed by orchestrator Robin G Breeze and a reading week with professional actors.
